1. погибнуть, пропасть и т. п. — (of a person) (to perish, be destroyed etc) to no purpose, futilely: (all) for nothing (naught)

(all) in vain.

Здесь ни за что погиб мой отец... Ни за грош пропала моя собственная жизнь (Зиновьев 1). "My Father died here for nothing.... My own life has been ruined for nothing" (1a).

2. обидеть, оскорбить, ударить, ругать, арестовать кого и т. п. \Ч-172 (to offend, insult, hit, berate, arrest etc s.o. ) without any reason or grounds for doing so

for no reason (at all)

for no reason whatever (whatsoever) for no good (particular) reason for nothing (at all) for nothing, for no reason just for the hell of it (quarrel) over nothing.
